This is the first episode of Insightful Product’s “OrthoticMe Challenge” series. This episode of our orthotic challenge was filmed at the Annual Science & Management Symposium (SAM) held in Orlando, Florida in January by the Florida Podiatric Medical Association (FPMA). In this Episode, Dr. Chris Swartz, DPM takes the challenge and demonstrates the OrthoticMe product on our control subject or patient. In the orthotic challenge, each podiatrist was challenged with the task of fitting our control subject with the orthoticMe product. Insightful Products has been listening to its customers and based on their feedback has developed the Tri-Ped drop foot night splint.
Insightful’s new Tri-Ped drop foot night splint is designed to be used around the house or at night when you would rather not wear shoes. Most AFO’s are designed to be worn with a shoe, including the Step-Smart drop foot AFO, but this design is easily put on and taken off by simply slipping your foot in and your foot out. It allows you to walk around the house barefooted. Because it is much more functional, it replaces the old Step-Smart slipper which has been discontinued. The night splint keeps the foot in a dorsiflexed position to give the user clearance at swing phase while still being flexible enough to allow plantarflexion. This brace is designed to be worn barefooted or with a sock.
OrthoticMe is the first modular foot orthotic to hit the market. With this “lego-like” modular system, the patient or practitioner can build a custom solution from the ground up. This allows the orthotic to work with virtually any shoe. Most custom orthotics are made for a specific foot but do not take into account the shape of the shoe, shoe insole, or shoe insert. OrthoticMe will work with most any shoe insert and can be customized to both the shoe and the foot. OrthoticMe utilizes both pre-manufactured velcro and composite materials (like carbon fiber) allowing the customer to fully customize the orthotic in virtually any possible shape.

This allows the custom fit orthotic to work with virtually any shoe insert or shoe insole. In this episode, a patient shows us his unique method for donning the Step-Smart AFO brace for drop foot. In most instances, Insightful suggests attaching the AFO brace into the shoe first and donning the shoe brace combination at once. In this example, the patient finds it easier to don the AFO brace first and then he slides the foot brace combination into the shoe.
In this week’s episode, we demonstrate how simple it is to put the Schooner Gauntlet style AFO on the foot and in the shoe. This gauntlet AFO is easier to put on than the Arizona AFO, the Buffalo Brace, the TCO, Amber AFO, Rybo, or Mile High AFO. All of these types of braces are used to treat PTTD, Post Tib tendon disorder (Posterior tibial tendonitis) but we believe that donning the Schooner AFO is much easier and fits better in most shoes.

In this weeks vblog, we demonstrate the AFO strategy used by Insightful to attach the AFO or ankle brace to the shoe using velcro. The foot and ankle brace is attached to the shoe using hook and loop pile. By attaching the ankle brace to the shoe, the unit becomes one. All of Insightful’s bracing is designed to work with a shoe and not without a shoe. Fastening the brace to the shoe makes it easier to don the brace or to put the brace on but also keeps the brace placed back in the heel of the shoe. This keeps the brace from creeping forward in the shoe and using up space in the shoe.
